Let's talk about podcast. I don't usually listen to any podcast really, but Twit seemed to have interesting conversations going on where it pulled in my attention.
LINK HERE
So on my recent listening of "this week in tech" from Twit, Leo Laporte and two of his colleagues talked about 4k display smart TV's and its functionality. They went into depth about how "smart" TV's now are too smart it's dumb because of all the things it does and what you have to press on the remote while you're watching your favorite show.
From their experience and knowledge in smart TV's are that there is too much things going on at once, in another words, it's a package some wouldn't enjoy. Laporte and the other speakers reported that while watching, a pop up much like ones on computers would randomly come up giving the viewer a notice of other things like updates or warnings. They all claimed they didn't like that feature very much and that it was distracting.
Some more things they rambled on about was the different settings the smart TV's weren't able to do on its own, like sport setting or cinema setting where the colors are more vivid or brighter depending on the viewer's show. They would consider it smart if the TV could differentiate those settings automatically, and it makes sense to expect that from it otherwise why would it be named what it is?
My point on this is that they are expecting a little too much from a smart TV, and I would agree with them. It is called a smart TV for a reason and it should be able to recognize these setting adjustments. It's capable of doing the same things a top dollar tablet or smart phone can do if not more. With the technology that's going into these "machines" you would expect a lot out of it. Yes some have 4k displays, but it's said that in some applications the TV doesn't even support up to 4k and that really is disappointing for buyers. I myself haven't gotten the chance to experience a 4k display smart TV yet, but soon enough.
These podcast has definitely caught my attention and I may find myself listening to it more now.

TED Talk
"How painting can transform communities," a presentation by two artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn. Link here to watch.
To summarize this presentation, artist Haas and Hahn explains their journey of an idea they came up with while shooting a documentary story about life in the Favelas. Favela is within a small community called Vila Cruzeiro located in Rio de Jeneiro, Brazil. The vision they had while overlooking the hills of Favela was to attempt to paint every house in that area because they saw that most houses were unfinished building and only a few were painted. Throughout their campaign they accomplished three painted areas, one on a side of a house of a boy flying a kite, second was a painting on an up-hill street covered in concrete of a Japanese style river with koy carps, and lastly was in the community of Santa Marta consisted of 8 to 10 houses painted in coordinated colors from left to right. In their process, they not only did painting, but built relationships involving the community, and understood from locals that things were built from the ground up.
The argument of this inspiring presentation in my belief was said by the artists themselves, "if your idea is ridiculously big, it's easier to get people to go along with it," which holds truth. Ideas are endless when everyone shares them with each other and expands off of it. Having ideas is something everyone shares where they can come to a common agreement doesn't matter their race, gender, religion or age. Like they had mention, everyone in the community sticks together and work together in times of hardship.
Visuals in Haas and Hahn's presentation were used effectively by scrolling through each one as they spoke showing what they did and how it got the community involved in the project.
Take a look.
Haas and Hahn not only let the visual speak for itself, but also spilled humor upon the crowd like how to bond with the neighborhood by barbecuing or how the kids wanted to see the kite that wasn't included in the boy painting and that they are to imagine it. Although, the pace of their presentation was a bit slow, it was still enticing for the audience just by the artwork it seemed.
Being an artist myself, of course not anywhere near as good as these two I really enjoyed watching this presentation. One reason was because they presented it as a story as if they were holding my hand and walking me through it. It kept getting more and more interested as they started explaining the detail of their vision in transforming this little community into an art gallery.
To conclude this, I believe that ideas can go a long ways from start to finish and these two artist showed that with the vision they had. Whether your vision is big or small, you stand behind it and believe that it is possible to accomplish whatever it may be; because if an individual doesn't already believe they can do it, then no one will. There is an innovative side in everyone, someone else just needs to bring it out of them and this was a great example of it through the actions of Haas and Hahn work.

The Use of Social Media Within A Company
Facebook and Twitter, as we know are the two most used social media tools up to date. It has revolutionized the way people communicate due to the growth of today's technology in thanks of the internet being accessible from virtually anywhere even on the go with smartphones. Organizations have adopted this use mainly for their professional image. It also helps promoting, and being found by those who are interested in the their activities.
First off let's take a look at Home Depot, a well established company, then a small family company like Rogan's Shoes, as to how they use both Facebook and Twitter by answering some questions. Why are they using these services? How are they using them? Who are the audience? How do they manage relationships with their audience, and are there strategies being used?
Why are they using these services?
Home Depot's Facebook and Twitter page are both attracting. A reason why they would use both is to show what they have to offer their consumers as far as products go.
How are they using them?
The way they use the social media tools is by making it interactive. They don't only concentrate on themselves about home improvements, but also cover a wide range of activities from college football game day, decors, and seasonal events which relates back to them.
Who are their audience?
Their audience consists of home owners, carpenters and or anyone that utilizes the tools they supply specifically for home improvement jobs.
How do they manage relationships?
Home Depot manage relationships by showing their involvement with the community around them by giving back and lending a helping hand to others in need of home remodeling.
Their Strategies?
Posting visuals for proof that they do show passion for what they do.
With Rogan's Shoes media sites, like Home Depot they set out with a similar purpose, and that is to bring in consumers who will come and want to stay.
Why are they using these services?
Since Rogan's is still a small family based company they are most likely using it to help promote themselves, and make it known that they want to be found and expand.
How are they using them?
Rather than using it to show what they can do or offer the consumer, they are using it as a way of closely communicating by asking their audience what they want to see posted. In a way it seems as though they are running out of ideas.
Who are their audience?
Simple, just about every person out there who loves shoes! Anyone from a business person looking for dress shoes, an athlete of all sports, someone whose job requires steel toe boots, a skateboarder, or just simply someone in need of a new pair.
Managing relationships?
By informing their consumer about sales, this creates a loyal relationship between both sides.
After assessing both organizations and how they use their social media tools, I have come to conclude that they both have similar goals, but different purposes. Every company wants to be found by showing their expertise publicly and they are doing it effectively by using these social media tools. Home Depot are more involved with their consumers as to where Rogan's Shoes concentrate more on possessing a large variety of shoes for people with different needs. As you can see they both have established their own ways of communication through Facebook and Twitter quite well just by either visuals or questions and answers their audience wish to see.

How Digital Resumes Work
Resumes, as we all know it's a summary of our work experience and skills we hold that gets us a job right? Before turning in that resume to the place you so dearly want to work for, you should probably find out how certain "words" will get your resume looked at.
Companies today are using what is called digital resumes to help save them time and money in the hiring process. And in doing so it can either hurt them, or help them find qualified candidates at a much faster rate.
Here's why.
During my class session we had talked about this topic that resumes can be separated into ranking from least qualified to most qualified. Therefore, it is true.
On my search for truth here's Kevin Lochner, an executive from Kenexa, a hiring software company who's client are Wal-Mart, General Electric, and Starbucks all together receive over a million candidates a month and all those digital resumes goes into a database. Once it's in a database they can quickly pull it and filter it, grade it, or rank it by how well it matches a job so recruiters only spend time looking at the best fits. Discussed in detail here.
The advantages to this are like stated above, there are millions of candidates each month and digital resumes saves them time along with money. Employers use keywords to search for qualified candidates and in doing so it is a much faster process. This benefits both the employer and the applicant. If the applicant were to have the keywords the employer are looking for then that will increase his/her chances of getting an interview for the job.
Disadvantages in the usage of digital resumes only can also hurt both sides in this process. For employers using this keyword scanning may cause the employer to lose out on a valued candidate(s) for the position and benefits the person may bring to the company. On the other hand, as said on smallbusiness.chron.com, it states that applicants can lose the chance of being considered because of outdated keywords on their resumes. Link here. So for applicants, they'll need to update their resumes from time to time when they are hunting for jobs.
Is it fair treatment? Yes and No. Here's what Eric Lochner has to say. He claims it is fair. Applicants has got to approach each opportunity and scenario differently as it varies by the hiring company. "They've got to customize or tailor their approach for every opportunity they want to go after." There's some truth to that, but physical judgement from a certain standpoint makes better calls in hiring the right person for the job.
Just something I found interesting while researching on this topic.
Happy job hunting. Update those keywords!

Why I Am At MATC
Why am I here? Why a technical college instead of a university? My reason was that it was the original plan I intended to go with and because of my permanent move here to Milwaukee. I felt a technical college was the route for me to take because in my mind I wanted to "turn pro sooner," like MATC says. Milwaukee Area Tech College wasn't the specific school of choice, but I saw that it had the program I was interested in, and that was the Network Specialist program. So I went ahead and took the chance to begin this opportunity as a stormer student to learn about information technology. I'm already feeling one step closer to becoming a professional just by enrolling.
So here I am at MATC progressing my way to the IT field. I am new to this field, but feel optimistic about what's in store down the road. Before this, I knew nothing about computer networking. I mean I still don't know anything yet because of the courses I am enrolled in, but I have a better understanding of what networking is. Within the next semester or two I will hopefully start to engage in working with designing, securing and troubleshooting networks etc, as the job title describes. That's what I wanted to learn and that is what I came to do.
As far as work experiences go I have none in this field, but minor understanding of setting up routers and making the internet work. Well, the plug and play part at least. I know there are some work required because I have seen a professional set it up once. All I know is that there are a lot of wiring connections involved.
The reason I chose the IT Network Specialist program was because I felt it was a growing job in demand due to the growth of today's technology. I want to land a nice job one day. Like most people would say, a "dream job". A job that I would brag about for the next thirty, fourty years from now about how great it is for me to be part of it. Technology is forever expanding, and it will continue to and that's what I expect for myself. I want to be able to travel on the job even if its a short or long distance. I want to be able to say I changed this in the computer today or I made this type of network happen. Most importantly, I want to work around people who are passionate in what they do and changing the world by their ideas. Therefore, I chose the IT field so that I myself may one day create something extraordinary for others to experience.
So there you have it. These are the reasons for the path I am taking. The reason why I enrolled at MATC. My interests in everything there is to offer about my career and what I see myself doing down the road. Although, I may not have the knowledge, work experience, or full understanding of information technology in networks yet, it is a work in progress. I will continue to keep up with the material as required and long for the day of graduation.
